My name is Laney Haskell and I am an artist from Knoxville, TN. I attended the University of Tennessee and received my BFA in Studio Art with a concentration in Drawing and Painting, as well as my MA in Art Education there. I have been teaching high school art since 2019.
While in grad school, I found it difficult to balance art-making with teaching, and I struggled with that challenge for two years. Without the resources, art space, and community of university, art-making was different and lonely. This was when I began experimenting with digital art and making comics, and later returned to traditional media like oil painting and watercolor. I also started taking local art workshops and participating in art markets, which helped me to begin building my art community in Knoxville.
My work is inspired by history, nature, mysticism, and human relationships to those three themes. At the heart of my work is story-telling in its various forms, whether it be through painting, illustration, or as a comic strip. My passions are working with my students, participating in my local art community, and learning more about other art mediums like mural-making and pottery.
Thank you for visiting my site! I hope my work resonates with you.
